Description

A warm and delicious apple dessert that combines the flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg with fresh apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½4 lb. apples
  • 1 lemon (freshly squeezed juice)
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon corn starch
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon (or more to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into cubes)
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 3 ½ Tablespoons cinnamon sugar (mixture of 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon and 3 Tablespoons sugar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with melted butter (or cooking spray), then set aside.
  2. Peel and core the apples, then cut into about 1/4 inch slices and transfer to a large bowl. Pour lemon juice over the apples and toss well.
  3. Add the mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and corn starch to the apples, then stir until evenly coated, then set aside.
  4. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar to a food processor and pulse just to combine.
  5. Next, add the cold cubed butter to the processor and pulse a few times until the butter is cut into really small pieces.
  6. While pulsing, add the milk. It won’t come together perfectly, but remove the blade from the processor and using a spatula mix it finally.
  7. Layer about half of the apples in the prepared baking dish, scatter ¼ cup of butter cut into small pieces and top with the remaining apples.
  8. Spread the topping over the apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
  9. Bake at 350F for about 50-60 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  10. Serve warm with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired.
