Butterscotch cinnamon pie is a delightful way to bring warmth and comfort to your dessert table. The combination of rich butterscotch with a hint of cinnamon creates a truly memorable flavor that’s perfect for gatherings or a cozy night in.

Butterscotch Sauce: The star of this pie is undoubtedly the homemade butterscotch sauce. I like to use light brown sugar as it enhances the caramel flavor, giving the pie that luscious, velvety texture. If you’re tight on time, store-bought sauce can work in a pinch, but nothing beats the homemade touch!

Cinnamon: This spice brings warmth and depth to the pie. A generous sprinkle of ground cinnamon not only complements the butterscotch but also adds a cozy aroma that fills the kitchen.

Cream Cheese: Incorporating cream cheese into the filling adds a lovely creaminess and balance to the sweetness of the butterscotch. Make sure to soften it a bit before mixing to achieve a smooth filling.

Pie Crust: Whether you opt for a flaky homemade crust or a convenient store-bought option, the base is crucial for that pie experience. A buttery, golden crust holds all the delicious filling beautifully.

These ingredients, when combined, create an irresistible dessert that keeps friends and family coming back for seconds!

Chocolate Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie

For those who can’t resist chocolate, consider adding cocoa powder to the filling. This creates a rich, decadent pie that perfectly complements the butterscotch flavor. A sprinkle of chocolate shavings on top enhances its appeal and offers a beautiful presentation.

Nutty Delight

Add some texture by incorporating finely chopped nuts, like pecans or walnuts, into the filling or as a topping. Not only does this enhance the flavor profile, but it also gives your Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie a delightful crunch that contrasts nicely with the smooth filling.

Cooking Tips and Notes for Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie

Creating the perfect Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie is an art, and every little detail counts. Here are some tips and notes to elevate your baking experience:

Choosing the Right Ingredients
Opt for high-quality butter; it contributes to the richness of the filling and crust. I favor unsalted butter so I can control the overall saltiness of the pie. For the butterscotch, using brown sugar will enhance the flavor and give it that deeply caramelized finish. Make sure your eggs are at room temperature; this helps in achieving a creamy batter that blends effortlessly.

Get the Texture Right
When preparing the filling, allow it to cool slightly before pouring it into the crust. This step ensures a smooth consistency and prevents the crust from becoming soggy. Speaking of crust, if you choose a pre-made option, be sure it’s fresh for the best texture. But if you’re feeling adventurous, a homemade crust is well worth the effort!

Spice It Up
Cinnamon is a star in this recipe, but don’t hesitate to experiment a little; a pinch of nutmeg can add an unexpected warmth. Remember, balance is key: you want the spices to complement the sweetness without overpowering the butterscotch taste.

With these insights, your Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie will surely impress friends and family alike. Enjoy the process and happy baking!

Achieving the Perfect Custard Consistency

The key to a delightful custard lies in the temperature and technique. Start by heating your milk and cream to just below boiling. Stirring continuously is crucial—this prevents the milk from scorching while allowing the custard to thicken evenly. When adding eggs, make sure to temper them by slowly whisking in a bit of the hot mixture before combining everything. This helps prevent curdling, resulting in that luxuriously smooth custard everyone loves in Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie.

Low-Fat Dairy Options

Just keep in mind that flavor and creaminess may be slightly affected. If you choose to go this route, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract for a more robust flavor profile.

Serving Suggestions

To elevate your Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie, consider serving it with a dollop of fresh whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. For added flair, sprinkle some toasted nuts on top to introduce a crunchy texture. This extra touch not only enhances the presentation but also complements the caramel notes beautifully.

Description

A creamy and delicious butterscotch pie with a smooth custard filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (or kosher salt)
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 9-inch pie crust (prebaked)

Instructions

  1. Get out and measure your ingredients.
  2. Place the brown sugar, heavy cream, and butter into a medium-sized saucepot.
  3. Place the pot over medium-low heat, start whisking immediately so the sugar doesn’t burn. Once the butter melts it will become smooth, stirring occasionally, bring it to a boil, reduce to a simmer, add cinnamon and simmer for 2 minutes until slightly thickened. Take off the heat.
  4. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the milk. Whisk the remaining milk into the pot, set aside.
  5. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl, set aside.
  6. In a bowl, add cornstarch, egg yolks, salt and remaining 2 tablespoons of milk.
  7. Whisk until smooth.
  8. Stream the egg mixture into the pot while whisking. Place the pot back on the stove over medium-low heat, whisking constantly so it doesn’t scorch on the bottom. The mixture will thicken to a thick pudding-like consistency.
  9. Immediately pour the custard over the strainer and bowl, you will need to do this a little at a time, you will need to use a spatula to press the custard through the strainer.
  10. The step with the strainer is to make sure the custard is completely smooth. There is a chance the egg may cook slightly and leave a few small chunks, this is why we strain. If you don’t mind that you can skip this step entirely.
  11. Don’t forget to scrape the custard off the bottom of the strainer when you are done.
  12. Stir custard until blended. Whisk the vanilla into the custard.
  13. Pour this mixture into the baked pie crust and smooth out the top. Allow to cool to room temperature. Cover with plastic wrap and place inside your fridge for at least 6 hours, if not overnight, and set.
  14. Slice. Serve with whipped cream, butterscotch chips, and butterscotch sauce.
