Description

Delicious cheesy beef sandwiches made with ground beef, sautéed vegetables, and melted provolone cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 sandwich buns (brioche or hamburger buns work well)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the veggies: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté until softened and fragrant, about 5–6 minutes.
  2. Brown the beef: Push the veggies to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until browned, about 6–7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Season and simmer: Add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together. Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the beef mixture.
  4. Add broth and thicken: Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for another 3–4 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes saucy.
  5. Melt the cheese: Turn off the heat and lay the provolone cheese slices over the beef. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts beautifully into the meat mixture.
  6. Assemble the sandwiches: Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto your sandwich buns. Serve hot, preferably with napkins at the ready!

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add diced jalapeños to the vegetables while sautéing.
  • These sandwiches can also be made using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
