Description
Delicious cheesy beef sandwiches made with ground beef, sautéed vegetables, and melted provolone cheese.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 4 sandwich buns (brioche or hamburger buns work well)
Instructions
- Sauté the veggies: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté until softened and fragrant, about 5–6 minutes.
- Brown the beef: Push the veggies to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until browned, about 6–7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
- Season and simmer: Add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together. Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the beef mixture.
- Add broth and thicken: Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for another 3–4 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes saucy.
- Melt the cheese: Turn off the heat and lay the provolone cheese slices over the beef. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts beautifully into the meat mixture.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto your sandwich buns. Serve hot, preferably with napkins at the ready!
Notes
- For a spicier version, add diced jalapeños to the vegetables while sautéing.
- These sandwiches can also be made using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
